Mark Weber: Iraq: A war for Israel

(Aamtekening): Het valt op dat hier nog van kosten van 500 miljard wordt gesproken. Vorig jaar werd gemeld dat de kosten voor de oorlogen in Irak en Afghanistan inmiddels zijn opgelopen tot 2.400 miljard (80% Irak). Er wordt gesproken over meer dan 4.000 Amerikaanse doden.

Mark Weber betoogt in het artikel “Iraq: A War For Israel”, dat de aanval van de VS op Irak bedoeld was om Israel te beschermen. Israel had zelf al sinds 1996 plannen klaar liggen om Irak aan te vallen, en de grootste gunst die de VS bondgenoot Israel kon leveren was dit karwei te klaren voor Israel.

Over de massavernietigingswapens van Irak en banden met Al-Qaida meldt Mark Weber:

“These claims were untrue. As the world now knows, Iraq had no dangerous “weapons of mass destruction,” and posed no threat to the US. Moreover, alarmist suggestions that the Baghdad regime was working with the al-Qaeda terror network likewise proved to be without foundation.”

Een motief voor de aanval op Irak: “Six months before the attack, President Bush met in the White House with eleven members of the US House of Representatives. While the “war against terrorism is going okay,” he told the lawmakers, the United States would soon have to deal with a greater danger: “The biggest threat, however, is Saddam Hussein and his weapons of mass destruction. He can blow up Israel and that would trigger an international conflict.”

“Bush also spoke candidly about why the US was going to war during a White House meeting on Feb. 27, 2003, just three weeks before the invasion. In a talk with Elie Wiesel, the well-known Jewish writer, Bush said: “If we don’t disarm Saddam Hussein, he will put a weapon of mass destruction on Israel and they will do what they think they have to do, and we have to avoid that.”

Uiteindelijk lijkt er een zeer grote tegenstrijdigheid te zijn. Israel wil dat vijandige regimes in het Midden-Oosten worden verdreven. Maar de aanval op Irak heeft alleen maar haat gezaaid tegen de VS.
